Swedish textile artist Maud Brorson, and husband, writer and retired high school teacher, Alf  Brorson, both of Torsby Sweden, will be the Artists-in-Residence at the Red Barn Studio Museum, 212 S. Main St., on Friday, October 11, and then, through Sunday, October 20.

This year marks their fourth residency at the Red Barn, and on  previous occasions the Brorson family, with sons, Jerker and Petter, have been to Lindsborg numerous times. They have given presentations, demonstrations and performances, and because of their involvement in the community the Brorsons have been named “Honorary Citizens” by the City of Lindsborg.

During her residency, Maud Brorson intends to show yarn techniques from previous residencies.  She will also have a retrospective display of what she has made in a variety of techniques back home.

Her specialty as an arts craftswoman is making leather handbags and purses of her own design (appliqué). Her talents also include old yarn techniques that Swedish pioneer women once brought with  them to America, like needle binding, weaving and ornamental  needlework, vegetable dyeing fibers, lacemaking, crochet work, tapping, hand and machine knitting, macramé, Flemish weaving and dressmaking. In 2012, she also brought the group Knit Café to life in Lindsborg.

Alf Brorson is the author of several books, including books about Lindsborg and its pioneer leaders. Of his residency, he says, “With a monthly column (A Sweden Letter) in the Lindsborg News-Record, my intention is to meet the readership and stay in touch with the Smoky Valley people. I’m planning to finish some stories as well  as get started on new ones from the perspective of the contemporary scene. We also intend to make a road trip to do a story on what was once Valhalla on the high plains of western Kansas,” This will be his 10th Hyllningsfest celebration (Brorson was Grand Marshal in 2005).

Maud and Alf Brorson reside in the Lake Fryken Valley in the province of Värmland.  For more information, please contact Red Barn Studio Museum, or 785 227-2217. Open: 10-5 Tues thru Fri, 1-5 Sat and Sun and by appt.
