Description

Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre presents the classic ballet "The Nutcracker" just in time for the holidays. Come enjoy this timeless tradition with your family and friends at the beautiful Wheelwright Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. Showing for two weekends only.

Ballet company reveals which local celebrities will be cast as ‘Mother Ginger’ character in ‘The Nutcracker’

Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre has announced who will be performing the role of Mother Ginger in the annual production of Peter Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” performed four times this year for the public on the Wheelwright Auditorium stage at Coastal Carolina University.

The celebrities and public figures have been nominated by their community members and will be featured individually in each of the performances. This year, they are:

  • Michele Kowalski, Coastal Dance Centre faculty member, will perform during the Dec. 7 show.
  • Jamie Arnold, chief meteorologist for WMBF, will perform during the Dec. 8 show.
  • Duane Farmer, the general manager of Grand 14 Cinemas in The Market Common, will perform during the Dec. 14 show.
  • Tom Winslow, an attorney with Goldfinch and Winslow Law Firm, will perform during the Dec. 15 show.

Audiences look forward to seeing the campy and loony Mother Ginger take the stage in Act Two of the ballet in all of her off-the-wall attire, up in an elevated contraption, endowed with a chest the size of beach balls, adorned with a crazy wig and a skirt that looks like it is a couple hundred pounds of fabric. The Mother Ginger character provides some comedy to the ballet as her Bon-Bons dance below!

Past “Mother Gingers” have included Barbara Jo Blain-Bellamy, mayor of Conway; Ed Piotrowski, chief meteorologist for WPDE; Johnny Vaught, Horry County councilmember; and Jeff Benton, DJ and radio personality, among others.

“The Nutcracker” tells the story of young Clara who is given a magical nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve by her eccentric uncle and godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, played by local artist Mark Tvrdik. Adventure awaits as she and her transformed Nutcracker Prince battle the frightful Mouse King (played by local artist Aaron Feight) before embarking on a journey through the Land of the Snow.

With the help of the Snow Queen, Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara, and her Prince travel to the Land of the Sweets where they are entertained by the Sugar Plum Fairy, her Cavalier, and Sugar Plum’s Entourage of Sweets. CYBT ballerina Siena Espana dances as the Sugar Plum Fairy, and guest artist Simon Wexler performs as the Cavalier.

The Nutcracker” is staged by CYBT professional artistic directors Liza Mata and Karen Mata to the magnificent music of composer Peter Tchaikovsky.

CYBT has been performing “The Nutcracker” during the holiday season every year since 2006. The ballet company also performs throughout the year at various public events and fundraisers, as well as during the annual Spring Festival of Dance.

Performance dates are Dec. 7 and 8 at 3 p.m. and Dec. 14 and 15 at 3 p.m.
