Blaine County Recreation District invites you, your friends & family and even your dog to join a free cross-country ski tour along the former Union Pacific Railroad. The Ski the Rails ski tour will take place Saturday, February 9th from Ketchum to Hailey on the BCRD Wood River Trail. The official event start is at 10 a.m. at Serenade Lane in Ketchum, or skiers can start anywhere along the Wood River Trail. The trail will be groomed for both classic and skate skiing, and all the tunnels will be snow-covered for the tour, pending sufficient snowfall. After “skiing the rails” skiers are invited to the Sun Valley Brewery for après-ski food, beverages, and live music.
Galena Lodge, Higher Ground, VAMPS/DONS and BCRD staff will host aid stations along the route providing snacks and beverages to keep skiers energized and warm. Participants will also find treats and swag along the route from Perry’s Restaurant, Clif Bar, Turtle Fur, and Backwoods Mountain Sports. Historical signs will be placed along the trail for participants to learn about the history of the area.
Free shuttle buses traveling north to the start at Serenade Lane depart from the Sun Valley Brewery in Hailey starting at 9:30 a.m. The last bus north departs the Brewery at 2:45 p.m. Also, a bus starting at 11 a.m. will shuttle skiers from the event finish line at Myrtle Street in Hailey to the Sun Valley Brewery. Dogs are allowed on the buses; however, they must be friendly and under control on a leash. The Wood River Trail is funded by tax dollars and is open to walkers, snowshoeing, skiers, fat bikes and dogs all winter. For more information, please call the BCRD at 578-5453 or visit bcrd.org.
