Description

"Indigenous Mexicans, Migration, and Indigeneity on the Move"

Though scholars have tended to understand "Mexican migrants" as a monolith, Dr. Ramírez's work focuses on indigenous P'urhépecha migrants from the state of Michoacán to trace how differently ideas of race, identity, and place transform within indigenous communities as a result of migration. In this talk, Dr. Ramírez will briefly outline the movement of indigenous peoples across the US-Mexico border, before finishing with an intimate look at P'urhépecha migrants in a new immigrant destination: North Carolina.
