Description

The Carnegie Mellon School of Music presents an extraordinarily rare production of Antonio Sartorio's Giulio Cesare in Egitto, which has been mounted only a handful of times since being rediscovered 300 years after its composition. Sartorio's dramatic and delightful score for Julius Caesar in Egypt utilizes the original Italian libretto written by Giacomo Bussani, which was later adapted for the more well-known opera composed by Handel.

The classic Julius Caesar tells the story of the Roman Dictator through a combination of a traditional period and contemporary visual and poetic approach. Guest Conductor and Director, Gary Thor Wedow and Dennis Whitehead Darling, will lead you in a newly envisioned production of the Shakespeare tragedy through the eyes of Cleopatra and the eponymous character who played a critical role in the demise of the Roman Republic and consequently the rise of the Roman Empire.
