Murder. Mayhem. Mozart.

Violante flees her violent lover Count Belfiore and finds safety and solace working as ‘Sandrina’ — a fake gardener — for the powerful Podesta. But when the checkered Count shows up on the Podesta’s doorstep to marry his high-maintenance niece Arminda, all hell breaks loose.

A lesser known comedy that boasts a typically lush and complicated score, La Finta Giardiniera is Mozart’s misguided madcap love story of mistaken identities, class and revenge.

This production sets the story in 1970s New York around Madison Square Garden and its infamous boxing matches. Thomas W. Douglas, Director of Opera Studies, conducts a production directed by Nic Cory (CFA 2009) and featuring an updated and streamlined translated libretto written by Nick Grosso (CFA 2022).

CONTENT WARNING: La finta giardiniera contains graphic violence and scenes of domestic abuse.
