Originally from Medellín, Colombia, soprano Melissa Medina is currently pursuing her second master’s degree in vocal performance at the Carnegie Mellon School of Music under the guidance of renowned soprano Maria Spacagna. Her roles at CMU have included Annina in Kamala Sankaram’s Looking at You, and Soloist/Ensemble in Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard. Additional recent operatic appearances include Frasquita in Carmen with Arte Lirico Foundation, Rosaura in Los Gavilanes with Prolirica Foundation, and Mary Magdalene in Rob Gardner’s The Lamb of God with Memorial Park Church. A frequent recitalist in her home country, Melissa has been featured at the Australian Embassy in Colombia, and at various venues throughout Peru, Argentina, Italy, Spain, and in the United States. Other highlights in the concert arena include her appearance as soloist in Rutter’s Gloria and Bach’s Magnificat with the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra. Melissa has been honored with many awards, including a 2016 scholarship from the Carolina Foundation to do a master’s degree at the Barcelona Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain. Additionally, she was one of the winners of the EAFIT Symphony Orchestra’s Young Talents Competition and a finalist in the Colombian National Singing Competition in 2018. She has been fortunate to participate in several masterclasses over the years, including Grace Bumbry, Dalton Baldwin, Juan Felipe Molano, and Jonas Kaufmann, among others.
