Ziyu Cai is a second-year Master of Science student in Music & Technology at Carnegie Mellon University. He completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Science with a focus in Artificial Intelligence at Peking University.
Ziyu began playing the piano at the age of 10, initially drawn to pop music and improvisation, but upon entering Peking University, he was profoundly influenced by its rich artistic atmosphere, which ignited a deep passion for classical music within him, and it was then that he began his study of classical music. He made his concerto debut and became the first student to perform a piano concerto with the Peking University Symphony Orchestra (Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No.2). He was the Chair of PKU Piano Association and was also the first student in recent years to hold a recital at the Peking University Hall.
Currently, Ziyu is studying piano performance under the guidance of Professor Luz Manríquez. In computer science, he is advised by Professor Roger Dannenberg and is working on a thesis focused on machine learning-assisted automatic accompaniment. During his first year at Carnegie Mellon University, he studied piano with Professor Frederic Chiu.
