A visit to the delightful Karoo town of Prince Albert, brimming with creatives and colourful characters, is always a treat. For art lovers and collectors, it gets even better, twice a year, when many of the local artists open their private studio spaces to the public for 4 days. In these hallowed spaces, some belonging to internationally known artists, you can find anything from ancient skills such as calligraphy, woodcutting and etching, through a whole spectrum from paintings in oils, watercolours and acrylics, both traditional and contemporary, to sculpture, jewellery made from found objects, land art, ceramics, and even some steam-punk light fittings made from old Land Rover parts. Stay a few days and look out for the colourful bunting and distinctive blue A-frame boards in front of various homes around town. Maps of the route are available from Prince Albert Art Gallery and the Tourism office.
